On 26th June 2016 I started the Teach Us Too campaign on change.org, calling for all children to be taught to read and write regardless of their label.
Alongside media coverage, I also started correspondence with the Minister responsible for SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). Eventually on 29th November 2016 I met with the Minister and his advisors, and on the back of that meeting the government commissioned some research into the effective teaching of literacy for non-verbal pupils with complex disabilities.
In January 2017 I wrote an article for the Guardian about education and the need to teach all children to read and write.
With the campaign still attracting attention and continuing to gain support I have now established a charity in the same name. Teach Us Too will continue to promote an education system where all children are taught to read and write regardless of their label.
I have made the following short film, aimed at professionals who come across children with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD). Please watch and share.
